Free workshop on citizen science
On Wednesday 26 March, 9.30am 4.30pm, a free citizen science workshop, open to all academic staff and postgraduate research students, will run at the Bath Royal Literary Scientific Institution (BRLSI).
Citizen science projects involve volunteers (the 'citizen scientists') partnering with researchers in data collection and/or data analysis activities to answer real world questions. More often than not, digital technology is used to gather data.
Citizen scientists benefit from taking part in meaningful scientific research whilst researchers gain from the added capacity that the citizen scientists bring.
The workshop will provide space for interaction and discussion around the opportunities and challenges presented by citizen science across both the physical and social sciences.
Alongside hearing from two keynote speakers Dr Robert Simpson (University of Oxford) who will present on the Zooniverse project and Dr Erinma Ochu NikeXXX (University of Manchester) who will present on citizen social science there will be presentations of citizen science projects drawn from across the GW4 universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter.
The workshop will also allow time to discuss issues such as the ethics of citizen science and methodological opportunities and challenges arising from the approach. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
